The 2018 election will be Tuesday November 6, 2018
In most races, the election will be between the Democratic nominee and the Republican nominee in each race.
On May 22, 2018 each party, the Democrats and the Republicans will select one of several candidates for each race to be the nominee for that race.
For example, for the GA 12th district congressional seat, the Democrats will choose one of their three current candidates (Mr. Nesmith, Mr. Johnson, or Mr. Ingham) to be their nominee; while the Republicans will choose one of their two current candidates (incumbent Mr. Allen or challenger Mr. Yu).
The November election will be between the Democratic nominee vs. the Republican nominee.
Some states have “closed” primaries, which means only people that are registered as “Democrats” can vote among the Democratic candidates in each race; while only people that are registered as “Republicans” can vote among the Republican candidates in each race.
Georgia has “open” primaries, which means any eligible registered voter may choose to participate in either the “Democratic” or the “Republican” primary, but not both.
When a registered eligible voter goes to vote in the May 22nd primary, they will be asked do they want a “Democratic” ballot or a “Republican” ballot. The “Democratic” ballot will only include the “Democratic” candidates in each race. The “Republican” ballot will only include the “Republican” candidates in each race.
It is not possible to vote for a “Democrat” in one primary race and a “Republican” in another primary race.
So for example, all of the candidates for Columbia County Commissioners are running as Republicans. So, a “Democratic” ballot will not include any candidates for Columbia County Commissioners (voters can write in a candidate).
So, if a person wants to vote for one of the three “Democrats” running to be the “Democratic” nominee for the GA 12th district congressional seat, they cannot vote for any of the “Republican” candidates for Columbia County Commissioners.
Because all of the candidates for Columbia County Commissioners are running as “Republicans”, the winner (in each race) will effectively be the winner in the 2018 November election.
In order to participate in the May 22nd election, eligible voters must be registered by April 24th. Eligible voters may register online at: https://registertovote.sos.ga.gov/GAOLVR/.
